AWARD-WINNING banjo tutor John Dowling, who holds popular lessons at The Brindley, has appeared on TV teaching comedian Frank Skinner to play the instrument.
The 25-year-old has revealed he is still tutoring the Midlands comic months after recording for the series came to an end.
As part of BBC's Play It Again season, comic Frank Skinner devoted four months of his life to learning the notoriously difficult banjo and was entered the international banjo championships in Kansas USA.
The show was broadcast on Sunday, April 1.
The weekly shows, showing six celebrities taking up the challenge of learning a new instrument in a matter of months, culminated in a grand performance.
John, who has now relocated to Helsby, started playing music at the age of five.
He acquired his first banjo at 14 and then devoted all his efforts to perfecting his mastery of the instrument.
John said: 'I thought it would be hard, and that Frank would be making jokes the whole time, but as it turned out he's a really nice bloke.
'He was very dedicated during the production and treated the banjo as a respectable instrument. He fell in love with it and I still teach him in London once every couple of weeks.'
John is currently involved in a number of projects, taking in a wide range of styles from western swing to classical.
Anyone who wants to learn the banjo with John can attend his Saturday morning classes at The Brindley, Runcorn, from 10am to 1pm. Call 0151 907 8360 for more details.
