JOHN Peel's widow has dedicated an Ellesmere Port band's song to her late husband's memory.

And she has described how the late music legend couldn't listen to the track without breaking down.

Does This Train Stop In Merseyside? by Amsterdam was chosen by Sheila Peel for a recent Radio One tribute show to the great man.

And Amsterdam frontman Ian Prowse couldn't be happier to have played a part in remembering one of the most influential figures in modern music.

Ian said: 'John told me he loved the song and it really moved him and, as a songwriter, you really can't ask for anything more than that.'

Sheila, who was with John when he suffered a massive heart attack in Peru on October 25, said: 'He just really loved the Amsterdam song. He always became really emotional when he played it.

'He just wasn't capable of playing it without crying.'

Amsterdam launched their debut single, The Journey, on new label Beat Crazy at Ellesmere Port's HMV store at The Coliseum on Monday.

The outfit hopes it will kick-start a pivotal year for them which sees them embark on their first full UK tour.
