A motorist was airlifted to hospital after being involved in a collision with a tree surgeon’s van pulling a wood chipper.

The male driver of the blue Saab appeared to be conscious and was still wearing his glasses while treated in  situ by paramedics and a doctor at the scene in Mill Lane, Bache, outside Morrisons supermarket, after the accident at 8am this morning.

Firefighters cut the roof off his car to make it easier for emergency services to work on the casualty, who is in his late 40s.

The driver’s door was then opened using hydraulic equipment before the  man was slid onto a spinal board and taken by air ambulance to Liverpool’s Aintree University Hospital because of suspected back injuries. The hospital was put on standby to receive the casualty.

It is understood the Saab was driving up Mill Lane as the white van, pulling a wood chipper trailer, was travelling in the opposite direction and turning right into Upton Drive.

There was minor damage to the front of the tree surgeon’s van. The male van driver, who was uninjured, was questioned by police at the scene. Wood chippings were spilled onto the carriageway. The local customer arrived at the scene to check the driver and his colleague were all right.

The road was closed just in front of the railway bridge causing disruption to traffic including the number one bus between Chester and Ellesmere Port.
