Musicians have been recognised for their talent at the recent annual general meeting of the City of Chester Band.

The Didier Chupeau Players’ Player of the Year award went to Philip Mottershead who has been connected with the City of Chester Band for 50 years as a player and musical director.

Phil is currently principal cornet as the band prepares to perform in the French Open Brass Band Championships in Amboise, in the Loire Valley, on Saturday, June 4.

The musical director’s award went to bass trombonist Donna Jackson.

Ewan Easton recognised the progress Donna had made as a player since he took over the role of musical director in January. She took up the trombone when she introduced her two young children to the training band.

Under the direction of musical director Ewan Easton there is greater emphasis upon working with children and young people. Joint rehearsals involving training and main bands are now held on a regular basis and there are meetings planned with the deliverers of music in Cheshire and Wirral schools to support the continuation of playing among young people as they move from primary to high school.
