Thieves are exploiting keyless technology to steal high powered cars in Cheshire.

Owners of the Ford Focus and Fiesta sport models are urged to be vigilant after a series of recent thefts.

Cheshire Police have put out the warning citing ‘auto criminals’ who are targeting the high-powered cars.

The offenders are either stealing keys from the home of the owner or using keyless technology to take the vehicles.

A number of Ford Focus and Fiesta ST-2, ST-3 and RS models have been stolen in recent weeks.

Detective Chief Inspector Kevin Chambers said the force was following ‘a number of lines of enquiry’.

He said: “But we are taking this opportunity to ask owners to be vigilant and take steps to make it difficult for thieves.

“If you have CCTV make sure it’s working, and if you can, make sure your car is in a locked garage or difficult to take, for instance locking it behind a gate or putting other cars in front of it.

“Never leave your keys in view or near the front door and make sure the alarm on your car is set.

“The Ford ST models are a range that appear to be targeted by the auto criminal, so we are asking owners to take extra care.”

Anyone with any information in relation to the thefts is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101.

Alternatively information can be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
