VALE Royal Borough Council has been forced to close the main swimming pool at Winsford Sports Centre after asbestos was found at the site.

Debris containing asbestos was found during routine maintenance around the pool's pipework.

That resulted in the closure of the swimming pool because of the potential health risk to employees of the council, who require access to the boiler room to control the temperature and quality of the water in the pool.

Head of environmental health services David Uden said: 'People who have used the swimming pool have no cause for concern. The asbestos debris was confined to the boiler room and therefore could not affect anyone in the swimming pool area.'

Lead councillor for leisure services John Grimshaw said: 'I apologise for any inconvenience this closure has caused.'

It is expected the pool will reopen on Monday.
