FIREFIGHTERS are urging residents to put away their bins after a string of arson attacks.

The warning comes after arsonists targeted wheelie bins on St James’ Avenue in Upton, in the days after Christmas.

At 1.30am on Wednesday (December 29), firefighters were called to the area after youths set fire to four bins, which had been left outside residents’ houses.

Ten firefighters tackled the blaze which was thought to have been started by two youths who were seen fleeing the scene.

Chris Rodaway, watch manager for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We want to advise all residents to put their bins out on the morning of collections, rather than on the night before.

“If bins are left out for long periods this provides people with opportunities to set fire to them.

“People don’t realise that the bins do not melt in a straight line, and so if they are positioned near to a vehicle or a house it could start a major house fire. Wheelie bin fires have the potential to seriously endanger lives.”

The warning comes just weeks after teenagers set fire to bins in Mill Lane, Upton.
