A COUNCILLOR is defying calls for him to resign after he was arrested for threatening children.

Saltney Town Councillor Tommy C Walker, 86, was arrested on April 12 for visiting two teenage girls at their home in Saltney on March 13 and threatening them with a shovel after his house was pelted with snow balls and his windows broken. Cllr Walker said he just wanted to talk to their parents.

He admitted the charge but would not accept a caution and no further action was taken by police.

A complaint about his conduct was sent to the Local Government Ombudsman but the body has now concluded no action needs to be taken.

Despite the Ombudsman's decision, Cllr Terry Walker said at Wednesday's town council meeting: 'I would ask members to support me when I ask Cllr T C Walker to resign. He has breached the code of conduct by bringing the council into disrepute.

'We are talking about two girls, one 14 and the other 15, frightened out of their wits.

'The Crown Prosecution Service concluded it was not in the public interest to prosecute due to Cllr Walker's age and poor health but I do not think this is acceptable.'

However, Cllr T C Walker and some of his fellow councillors think he is being victimised. He said: 'I am being bullied and harassed by certain members of the council - one of the girls in question is Cllr Frost's granddaughter.

'I am sorry for my actions but I was at my wits' end. The Ombudsman is not taking action and this should be the end of it.

'I will not be resigning and I am staying on the council.'

Cllr Bill Crawford said at the meeting: 'I think this is unacceptable. The Ombudsman is not taking any action and the proper process has been carried out. We should not ask him to resign, it is very unfair.'

The council decided at the meeting to send Cllr T C Walker a formal letter, asking him to resign.
