CHESTER'S driving test centre is set to move to former Army training base Saighton Camp.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has applied to build a new state-of-the-art centre at parade grounds on the 100-acre site to replace its existing facility at Dicksons Drive in Newton.

It says the current site is unsuitable because of new rules for motorbike tests meaning off-road manoeuvres will be carried out at up to 31mph.

The application comprises a single-storey building, 16 car parking spaces, eight motorbike spaces, a motorbike manoeuvring area, landscaping and a drainage system.

Access would be via Sandy Lane, with tests between the hours of 8am and 6pm and traffic flow estimated at 200 vehicle movements per day.

A ten year lease has been agreed between the DSA and landowner Commercial Estates.

The application states tests at the site will not involve high speed manoeuvres or noise nuisance.

It adds: 'The proposal will not have any detrimental impact on the surrounding area or remainder of the camp and will not generate significant traffic.'

Huntington parish councillor Mark Williams said: 'I can't see it increasing traffic through the village much.'

If Chester City Council planners give the go-ahead - and there have been no objections to the proposal so far - the new centre could be open by spring. A decision is due by August 23.
