AN ARMED robber wearing a balaclava has left staff at a city centre cheque casher “very shaken”.

Shortly after 10am on Saturday, August 9, a male and female member of staff were on duty at The Money Shop, Brook Street when the raider stormed in demanding cash.

There were no customers in the shop at the time.

Police spokeswoman Jacqui Hanson said: “One male offender walked into the shop and threatened staff with what appeared to be a handgun. He demanded money which the staff handed over and then left on foot heading down towards the side of the shop in the general direction of the Mill Hotel.

“Nobody was injured as a result of the incident. One male and one female member of staff were very shaken.”

The offender is described as wearing a grey balaclava, a grey hooded top, grey jogging bottoms and a darker coloured jacket. He is estimated to be around 5’ 8” and of average build.

Ms Hanson added: “Police are appealing for anybody who may have witnessed any part of this incident, including the offender prior to the offence occurring as he may have put on the balaclava nearby, or who may have had any interaction with him.

“Police are also keen to hear from anybody who may have seen him leave on foot at the conclusion of the event and may be able to assist in any further description of where he went.”
