AN ARCHITECT will be cycling from the mountains to the sea on an epic journey which will take him across the equator.

Paul Downey, 64, will be training hard during the Christmas and new year period in preparation for the gruelling Ecuador Cycling Challenge, which he will take up in February to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief.

The 500km cycle ride is one of Macmillan's toughest challenges and will take Paul, of Peacock Avenue in Winsford, from Tena in the heart of the rainforest, through Quito, the capital city, over the equator and on to Atacames on the Pacific Coast.

'This will be one of the toughest things I have done,' said Paul.

'The total distance we are due to cover during the seven-day ride is huge - some days we will be cycling more than 100km.

'But knowing that the money raised will help people facing the far greater challenge of living with cancer will keep me going, I'm sure.

'I am taking part in the challenge because I have heard so many people speak well of Macmillan Cancer Care and this year an old friend of mine, who was terminally ill, was given a large dose of tender loving care by Macmillan nurses during his final weeks.'
