AN URGENT appeal for new leaders has been made in Widnes after a string of Scout groups were forced to close across the town.

Eric Hill, district commissioner of Widnes Scouts, says many local groups are struggling to cope with the 'sheer numbers' of Scouts, Beavers and Cubs who are desperate to join Scout groups simply because there are not enough adults coming forward to be leaders.

He said: 'We are already struggling in some groups and I would like to be in a position to have all sections in every group and also to reopen some groups that have folded.'

Last week children from the various groups linked up to take part in their annual St George's Day parade, which was a 'huge success'. However, if the district does not get more help from people in Widnes Mr Hill says many of the events will die.

He added: 'Last summer we held a district camp at Sandiway, where more than 150 young people from Widnes got the chance to try their hand at everything from assault courses to archery.

'But to enable the district to continue putting on these events it needs adult help - people who are willing to become leaders, assistants or helpers.'

The district has 30 uniformed leaders who look after 220 children in Widnes from the age of six.
