The family of a mum recently diagnosed with cancer is desperately trying to raise enough money to bring her home to Vicars Cross from Spain.

Sarah Kaye, 67, relocated to the country’s Murcia region two years ago with her husband Brian upon their retirement, but two weeks ago she received the devastating news that she had brain and lung cancer.

Now her three daughters and two sons are rallying to come up with £20,000 to transport her to the UK, as they are unable to secure travel insurance for her.

Their initial plan was to charter a medical plane, but Sarah – a former area manager for an independent nursing home company – is now unable to fly.

The family are now considering bringing her home by ferry or by private ambulance, depending on how well she is.

Sarah’s daughter Claire Taylor, 37, told the Chronicle that she ‘would do anything’ for her ‘beautiful, amazing’ mum.

“We want to bring her home for a number of reasons,” she explained.

“Although the medical care in Spain has been fantastic, the language barrier is proving a problem, plus there is no aftercare such as physiotherapy and at-home nursing care.

“Currently, the weather is extremely hot and getting fluids down my mum is proving difficult during her radiotherapy sessions, so we’re worried about dehydration.

“If they were in the UK, family is close by to be able to support mum and dad.”

Claire, who has cystic fibrosis, suffered a collapsed lung a few weeks ago so she cannot fly for at least three months, which she says is a ‘massive frustration’ as she just wants to ‘be there’ for Sarah.

Claire added that any surplus money raised will be used to purchase aids that will make Sarah’s life easier and to buy her a ‘really good wig’.

She said: “I would just like people to think about what they would do if they were in the same situation.

“A small donation could make a massive difference to our family. The generosity of people so far has amazed me.”
