THERE are so few opportunities these days to see archery, falconry, chainsaws and lasers in the grounds of a 200-year-old castle.

Yet the Cholmondeley Castle Country Show had them all and a good deal besides. The show, which is to become an annual event at the castle, attracted 10,000 people over the weekend, including Lord and Lady Cholmondeley and Ginger McCain, trainer of Grand National winner Red Rum, who were presenting the prizes for the horse riding competitions.

Highlights of the weekend included falconry demonstrations, ferret racing, gun dog displays and sidesaddle horse racing. The event also featured a wide variety of attractions, ranging from chainsaw carving to simulated laser shooting.

The event was organised by Living Heritage and was the first such event they have held in Cheshire.

Company secretary Marge Needham said: 'Overall it was a very definite success - we were very pleased with the reaction of the public and we're looking forward to being back next year.'
