PLANS have been submitted to convert another small hotel in Hoole into student accommodation.

The Chronicle previously revealed Alton Lodge Hotel, Hoole Road, Hoole, had applied for permission to create 21 en suite student rooms, with communal facilities.

Now English language school English in Chester has applied for planning consent to convert The Glann Hotel, Stone Place, into 10-bed accommodation for visiting adult students.

Fears have been raised that an influx of students could change the character of the area although the applicant argues its proposal should be seen in a different light to general student accommodation.

English in Chester says historically English students from overseas have stayed with local families but many adults prefer a greater degree of independence.

A supporting document states: “In order to provide this level of independent accommodation and expand their business further, they require designated self-catering accommodation.”

The applicant is aware the council is clamping down on houses of multiple occupancy, particularly in the Garden Lane area, but says planning officers recognise this scheme, aimed at over 20s and with on-site management, would be acceptable.

In 2010, the school, based in Stanley Place, had 1,718 students whose average age was 29 and whose average length of stay was nearly four weeks.

The Glann Hotel was discretely marketed over 2010 and 2011 and subsequently entered into a local property auction to attract interest. The only interest was from English in Chester who made the offer outside the auction. In the meantime, the premises continue to operate as a bed and breakfast hotel.
