A PENSIONER has criticised council bosses for refusing to provide first aid equipment at a Nantwich allotment site.

James Maguire, of Wilbraham Close, Acton, leases a plot from Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council at the Welshman's Lane site but believes there should be first aid equipment provided.

The retired engineer and gardener, who is trained in first aid, says legislation is getting in the way of the safety of the 30-plus people using the allotment site.

He said: 'I can't be worrying about legislation when I've got somebody bleeding and I need to help them.'

'When I got refused I was very annoyed but you have to put it behind you and just do it yourself. My problem is its very expensive to maintain the equipment needed to administer first aid.

'Everything has to be sterilised and you have to have the correct bandages. This is not on - the safety of the tenants is at stake.'

However, the council insists that the provision of such equipment on allotment sites is outside its remit.

Assistant Parks Manager Glyn Ollier said: 'It appears that legislation does not put employers under any obligation to provide first aid equipment for anyone other than their own employees.

'For this reason, the borough council does not supply first aid containers to their allotment sites.'
