AT LEAST 15 jobs could be created at a new low-cost grocery store planned for the town centre.
As exclusively revealed by the Pioneer last week, bargain food chain Aldi has submitted an
application to the borough council for a store in Grange Road, right next to the new Asda supercentre which is due to open tomorrow morning.
Aldi's property director for the North West, John MacFarland has now given more details of the proposed development.
The store, which would have a shopfloor area of 1,100 square metres, would be built from high quality materials to a modern design, according to Mr MacFarland.
Commenting on how close it would be to the new Asda store, he said: 'It would be right next to it and part of the same development scheme. 'Our stores operate successfully next to Asda and Sainsbury stores in many areas of the country.
'Our current stores further up the Wirral, in Heswall and Bebington, are some of the most successful we have and we think Ellesmere Port could be the same for us.
'We have been trying to get into the area for some time and we are hopeful we will now make it.'
He added: 'We are confident of our planning process as we will demonstrate this new store will be good for the area and for us.
'We always try to recruit locally and in this case we would be looking to create about 15 jobs.'
The new store would have associated parking, servicing, access and landscaping.
Following consultation, the scheme will go to the borough's planning committee which will make a decision some time in the next few months.
Aldi operates more than 5,000 stores around the world.
Earlier this year, Morrisons withdrew an application for a huge store near West Cheshire College in Regent Street, and submitted alternative plans for a smaller one.
But it still did not find favour with borough planners, who rejected it in a 5-4 vote.
The Aldi application was received by the council on July 17 and is currently subject to public consultation. All comments must be received by tomorrow (August 10). Residents' views can be e-mailed to the planning office at planning.admin@ epnbc.gov.uk
