PLANS to bring in a booze ban on the borough's streets have been put back several months.

The council had been due to discuss the measure, designed to help crack down on anti-social behaviour, at its meeting last night.

But when it was taken off the agenda at the last minute councillors asked the borough's legal chief Chris Chapman the reason for the delay.

Cllr Jonathon Starkey (Con, Ledsham) said: 'All councillors have expressed problems with anti-social behaviour because of underage drinking. In our Community Committee last August we debated introducing alcohol-free zones. They would help in Whitby Road, for example, and Whitby Park where children are drinking.

'But it has not been implemented yet. I want to ask Mr Chapman and the legal people why there has been this delay.'

Council leader Reg Chrimes said: 'We have already adopted the idea of the zones in Ellesmere Port and Neston. We need to introduce them.'

Borough community leisure officer Philip Hearfield said: 'Due to various legal processes, it will take several months to be implemented.'
