Police say the signs appear positive for a contractor airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries from the Urenco nuclear facility at Capenhurst .

The man, who is employed by Balfour Beatty, was apparently ‘hit on the head by something’ in an incident reported about 11.30am on Wednesday (April 13).

He was flown to Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool where he remains. The Office for Nuclear Regulation is investigating.

Cheshire Police spokesman Daniel Hind said the log updated in the early hours indicated the casualty’s injuries ‘do not appear to be life-threatening’.

He said police had initially attended to assist the air ambulance in landing. Officers had also forensically secured the scene.

The Chronicle was originally told the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) was investigating but it later transpired the inquiry was being handled by the Office for Nuclear Regulation.

A spokeswoman said: "We are aware of the incident and are in contact with Urenco and the site."

A North West Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the male casualty had suffered ‘a significant head injury’ after he was ‘hit on the head by something’.

Urenco spokesman Neil Fagan confirmed there had been an accident involving a contractor working on a giant construction project to build a £500m plant that will convert depleted uranium into a more stable and safer powder form. He is awaiting more details.

A statement from the casualty's employers Balfour Beatty is expected to be released soon but the company has confirmed their employee has only minor head injuries and is due to be discharged shortly.
