A CHESTER school pupil has beaten off tough competition to take the title of Junior Recycling Officer of the Year 2010.

Aimee Kiernan, from Newton Primary School, impressed judges with her hard work to promote the Reduce, Re-use and Recycle message to fellow pupils and their families through the school year.

The event, held at Delamere Forest Education Centre, saw five finalists put their year-long achievements into words. Aimee was presented with a mountain bike for her efforts, with the runners up receiving pen sets made from sustainable forest material.

Their year-long task has been to promote the recycling message to classmates, teachers, family and friends through events, competitions, games and newsletters.

The junior recycling Officers received advice on a range of recycling opportunities including home recycling and composting and old mobile phone and textile re-use to help with their campaigns.

The finalists were: Jordan Baxter – Frodsham Weaver Vale Primary School; Aimee Kiernan – Newton Primary School; Charlotte Higgins – Winsford Over St Johns Primary School; Brittany Hazlehurst – Neston Primary School; Ben Piercy – Cherry Grove Primary School.

Councillor Lynn Riley, Executive Member for Community and Environment, said: “Applications for the Junior Recycling Officer of the Year accolade were all of an exceptional standard – it was extremely difficult for us to chose a winner from such a dedicated group.”

The Junior Recycling Club is a highly successful initiative, established in 1993 in primary and junior schools across Cheshire.
