DEVELOPERS have been given the go-ahead to build 45 apartments to complement Runcorn's most celebrated waterfront landmark.

Permission has been granted to Charlton Homes to build affordable homes on the banks of the historic Bridgewater Canal next to Bridgewater House with building work expected to begin in February.

Described as one of the most 'exciting' residential developments by the housing company, buyers will have the choice of three layouts.

Features include a spacious lounge, fully fitted kitchen, one or two bedrooms - with the second large enough to be used as a study or dining room, and a bathroom with electric shower.

The project will coincide with a Persimmon Homes development also scheduled for the waterside location.

A planning application has also been submitted by developers Peel Holdings to convert Bridgewater House - the former HQ of the Manchester Ship Canal Company - into luxury apartments.

Modern, designer apartments will be housed in a five-storey block behind Bridgewater House, near the Sixth Form College site, and a 11-storey development is scheduled opposite and to the south.

The proposals include 66 one-bedroom, 54 two-bedroom and one three-bedroom apartments in three buildings.
