The long-awaited opening of Winsford’s new marina will be presided over by a celebrity guest.

Acclaimed actor Timothy West CBE will be treading the boards at the marina at 2pm on Saturday, April 30, when he will unveil a commemorative lock gate to officially mark the completion of an extensive refurbishment project which has spanned the past two years.

Timothy and his wife Prunella Scales - of Fawlty Towers fame - are ardent waterways enthusiasts, sharing their passion on Channel 4 show Great Canal Journeys.

The opening of the marina is the culmination of a joint effort by Winsford Town Council and the YMCA waterways project team to encourage more boaters to use the River Weaver.

Nigel Hughes, CEO of YMCA Wirral and member of River Weaver Navigation Society, said: “The River Weaver is a spectacular waterway which links into the main inland waterways system at Anderton, yet it was rarely explored by boaters – many put off by the myth and rumours that the river was un-navigable beyond the Red Lion at Winsford.

“I’m pleased to say that Winsford Town Council embraced the concept of developing the marina into a tourist destination and this has led to investments in improved visitor moorings and facilities at the head of the current navigation – the new Winsford Marina.

“Given the heritage of the river Weaver and the remarkable scenery around Winsford Bottom Flash, these moorings with their close proximity to shops and decent places to eat and drink make Winsford a great place to sail to.”

Mr Hughes explained that Timothy was the obvious choice to perform the reopening honours and is delighted that the popular thespian agreed so enthusiastically.

“I would also like to express special thanks the local management and staff of the Canal and River Trust who have been superb in helping us with this project – it’s been a real team effort and I am sure the big day will be a special one for Winsford,” added Mr Hughes.
