PUPILS from Acresfield Community Primary School in Upton were a sporting success at this year’s Junior Open Cross Country Races.

The pupils in Years 3 to 6 won a total of nine medals, including four gold, in the competition against schools in Chester, Ellesmere Port and Neston.

Heather Mylchreest, nine, scooped up five medals in the girls’ races, including the overall gold medal for the series, and Matthew Garner, also nine, won four medals in the boys’ races, including the overall silver medal for the series.

A group of four Year 6 pupils from the school also managed to win the first place trophy in the group competition for the second year running, after winning the title as Year 5 pupils last year.

Teacher Helen O'Reilly said: “We’ve got a big number of children in our group this year. The 30 children in the club from Years 3 to 6 train once a week come rain or shine.

“We’ve got a lot of hope for next year as well. Quite a lot of the young ones are running really well. Hopefully we can build on the success of this year.”

The annual competition, which takes place from November to March at Cheshire Oaks High School, is organised by West Cheshire Athletics Club to encourage children in Years 3 to 7 to participate in cross-country.
