Commuters from Chester to Colwyn Bay are facing delays with one lane still shut on the A55 after yesterday's major chemical spill.

Congestion has been reported on the westbound carriageway on Wednesday morning (March 23).

The A55 at Colwyn Bay was closed completely at 11am yesterday, between Junction 22 the Promenade at Old Colwyn and Junction 23 at Abergele Road, after a tanker shed its load.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service chiefs said 27,000 litres of the chemical - believed to be a corrosive substance called Ferric Chloride - was spilled during the incident.

A spokesman for Traffic Wales initially said the eastbound carriageway was set to re-open by 11pm last night.

However, that carriageway was cleared at 9pm and reopened two hours ahead of schedule.

One lane was re-opened westbound by about 1am, the other remains closed.

After 6am this morning the North Wales Police Control Room tweeted: “Colwyn Bay is now open eastbound and one lane open westbound. Traffic is flowing freely at this time. Thank you.”

Last night, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service were aiding the clean-up effort at the scene of the spill.

A specialist chemical company was also in attendance alongside emergency services in a bid to bring the situation under control.

Routes around the accident site in Old Colwyn and Colwyn Bay were also gridlocked as motorists tried to find alternative routes to get to their destinations.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said nobody was taken by them to hospital following the incident.
