A FIRE at a workshop in Chester caused the A55 to be closed for six hours on Friday, October 10.

Two gas canisters at the site exploded but no-one was injured because a safety cordon was in place.

A spokesman for Cheshire Fire Service said that the blaze, which completely destroyed the building, was possibly caused by an accidental car fire.

He added: "As there were three acetylene cylinders in the building, we had to implement a 200m cordon because of the risk of explosion, which unfortunately meant the closure of part of the A55 at a very busy time of day. This led to tailbacks going as far as Manchester.

"Two cylinders actually did explode and we will be in attendance until around 4pm on Saturday to ensure the third canister is cooled down and made safe."
