MORE than 25 members of the 2nd Tarvin Brownies took Girl Guiding to new heights when they visited Peckforton Castle to claim their prize of a falconry session and lunch after winning a competition to find names for two baby owls.

The 2nd Tarvin Brownies suggested the names Baden and Powell for the new brown wood owl and great grey owl after the legendary Scouting movement founder and in celebration of 100 years of girl guiding.

As part of the prize, the 2nd Tarvin Brownies were treated to a lunch and a falconry session with falconer Danny Willan, who officially named the owls and went on to explain more about the hotel’s conservation work and its 30 birds of prey, which include owls, hawks, falcons, and eagles.

Tawny Owl Emma Blain of 2nd Tarvin Brownies said: “All brownie Guiders are named after owls so we were delighted to have been chosen as the winners of the competition. We had a wonderful time at Peckforton Castle and everyone really enjoyed learning more about the hotel’s collection of birds of prey. We can’t wait to return again soon.”

Peckforton Castle managing director Chris Naylor added: “All the judges thought that the 2nd Tarvin Brownies suggestion was brilliant. The names suit the owls perfectly and we were delighted to be able to teach the girls more about our birds of prey and the important conservation work we’re involved with.”
