After a 20-mile car chase through Cheshire and Merseyside a 28-year-old man from Frodsham was arrested.

The driver of a white VW Polo was caught almost half an hour later when he refused to pull over shortly after noon on November 11.

A 22-year-old man from Runcorn was also arrested.

Cheshire Police ordered the car to stop in Moor Lane South, Widnes, as part of Operation Crossbow which is targeting lawbreakers on the road.

Their request was refused and the pursuit took off into parts of Merseyside.

A motorist had to pull over to get out of the way of the chase in Mill Lane, Rainhill.

He said: “I suddenly saw about six marked police cars rushing towards me. I had to get out of the way quickly as they all rushed past. There was no way that Polo was stopping. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Eventually the Polo came back into Cheshire and was cornered at Daresbury Technology Park after a 25-minute pursuit.

The two men have been taken into custody.

Cheshire Police said their patrols kept a 'safe distance' when following the suspects' car.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Beauchamp said: “We are relentless in our pursuit of organised crime and will use a whole host of tactics to disrupt criminals working in our region.

“Criminals do not simply stop committing crimes when they reach the police border, but instead they rely on the road network to enable them to commit criminal offences.“

Operation Crossbow had 60 officers taking part using Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology to identify those wanted on the police database.
