For somebody Nina Barbour’s age, she has a huge amount of responsibility.

The Bolesworth Estate, situated in the heart of Cheshire countryside, has been under the careful stewardship of the Barbour family since 1856.

When they bought it the estate extended to 2,000 acres but, after steady expansion by the family, it is now more than 6,000 acres.

Twenty five years ago Nina’s father Anthony had a vision to create a modern working environment on a traditional estate by utilising former farm buildings and Bolesworth now boasts more than 125 commercial lettings, employing more than 850 people.

As well as commercial lettings the estate is now made up of 150 residential lettings and 12 dairy farms, which produce 21,000,000 litres of milk a year.

It is also home to the hugely successful Bolesworth Classic event – a massive family day out centred around top-class show jumping in the grounds of Bolesworth Castle.

The show also offers a shopping opportunities, craft stalls, children’s entertainment as well as an extensive timetable of attractions.

Now, at the age of 32, Nina Barbour, is director of the entire Bolesworth Estate.

After her father’s death in 2007, she took over the leadership and her influence has produced some of the most successful leisure events Cheshire has ever seen.

But equestrianism is her main passion in life.

With partner Oliver Townend, Nina set up Harthill Stud in 2009, with the primary objective of producing top-class event horses for both national and international markets, with emphasis on traditional Irish and thoroughbred bloodlines.

Together they have sourced some exceptional stallions as the breeding foundation for Harthill Stud.

Nina’s achieved much since taking over the estate.

After gaining a 2:1 degree and MA in Geography from Cambridge University in 2001, Nina returned home to the Bolesworth Estate, where she set up and ran a livery yard at the same time as competing to three-star level herself.

It was a huge responsibility to take on and Nina said: “Of course it was difficult after my father died but I had the support of my mother Diana, sister Cleo and the estate team.

“My mother is still very much involved in the estate and we have a great working relationship.

“I’m now looking to the future, focusing on both the leisure and events industry as well as equestrianism, and am aiming to make the Bolesworth Classic an international show by 2014.”
