PETS AT HOME in Chester is celebrating its first full year of fundraising in which it has helped to raise a staggering £650,000.

Pets at Home launched its own charity, Support Adoption For Pets, formerly known as The Pets at Home Charitable Foundation, with the aim of promoting and encouraging the re-homing of adoptable pets, supporting animal welfare charities and encouraging responsible pet ownership.

Louise Stonier, chairman of the trustees for Support Adoption For Pets, said: “Pets at Home first started providing funding to worthy causes back in 2004 which has seen us provide over £1.3 million to pet related charities over the past five years. Since its official re-launch in January, Pets at Home has seen a huge surge in requests for support from local charities, as the economic downturn starts to impact on pet owners.

“Support Adoption For Pets supports both national and local animal charities and organisations, from charities as well known as The Blue Cross, Cats Protection and the RSPCA down to the smaller local centres such as Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary and Manchester Dogs Home.”

There are over 270 local re-homing centres throughout the UK that are partnered with Pets at Home stores.

One of Pets at Home’s most important projects which promotes animal welfare, are the dedicated adoption centres in nearly 200 of its 231 stores across the UK.

Store manager of the Chester branch, Sarah Truscott, said: “Our adoption centres give people, who for whatever reason can’t look after their pet, the opportunity to ensure that they are cared for until they can be re-homed with a loving family.”
