A talented young chartered surveyor has been appointed chairman of RICS Matrics Merseyside and Cheshire – a networking and support group for professionals in the land, property and construction sectors at the start of or in the early stages of their career.

Project manager at AECOM in Liverpool, Dean McDonough, has taken up the role after proving to be an invaluable member of the committee, helping to organise many popular activities and seminars to help young industry professionals increase their knowledge and skill set.

With more than six years’ experience in the construction industry and project management expertise in a number of sectors including infrastructure, energy and manufacturing, Dean is well placed to steer the group’s committee, starting with delivering a diverse programme of topical knowledge sessions and networking activities.

Dean said: “I am delighted to be taking on the role of chair - we already have some insightful seminars lined up for autumn, with topics including Due Diligence for Acquisitions, Asbestos Management and Rating Case Law, with lots more planned for the forthcoming year.”

He added: “In the property industry firms often collaborate together on projects, so it’s important to build strong contacts, but this can be quite daunting when you are first starting out in the industry. We offer informal networking – often in local bars over drinks and food – to help professionals at similar stages of their career forge friendships which often lead to doing business together.”

As part of his role as chair, Dean will also ensure the committee meets with students at local universities and colleges to offer support and advice to those interested in pursuing a career in the property industry.
