A shoemaker has chosen Chester to open its first store outside London.

Following the success of Loake shoe sales in The Brogue Trader in Cardiff, which opened in 2013, the high-end shoemakers have opened a shop in St Michael’s Row in the city.

Originating from Northamptonshire the family-run brand have been producing fine, handmade men’s footwear since the 1880s.

Store owner Chris MacNamara, said: “We aim to create an experience beyond shopping; by rekindling the art of independent retail we’re creating a gentleman’s community here.

“There’s always a cold beer, strong espresso or stiff whisky awaiting our customers, combined with friendly and knowledgeable staff who are passionate about what we do, which all make for an enjoyable shopping experience. As a result many of our customers keep in touch and are loyal to the brand.”

The innovative approach has been recognised by The Footwear Industry Awards, which crowned The Brogue Trader as New Independent Footwear Retailer this year.

The future looks bright for Loake, with plans further expansion including 10 new stores across the UK in the next five years.

Chris added: “The store has already proven to be a huge success with sales figures far-exceeding expectations within the first few weeks of trading.

“The location on the elegant St Michaels Row in the Grosvenor Shopping Centre is the perfect position for us in Chester. With other high-end retailers such as Gieves & Hawkes, L K Bennett and The Eye Emporium there is a sense of modest sophistication.”

Grosvenor Shopping Centre’s manager Julie Webb, said: “Loake is a refined and stylish addition to the Grosvenor Shopping Centre portfolio and we’re delighted to welcome them at the start of what is set to be a very exciting year for us. We’re always keen to support independent retailers and are thrilled they’ve experienced such success already.”
