A TECHNOLOGY firm has developed an internet-based software product that enables businesses to connect with customers via their smartphones.

Gwernaffield-based Cybernetics says the rise of Quick Response (QR) codes represents a huge opportunity for small and medium-sized companies.

QR codes are two-dimensional barcodes that can be scanned using a camera-enabled smartphone such as an iPhone, BlackBerry or Android device in order to link to online content or activate functions including email.

Rather than linking a QR code to a standard website, Cybernetics’ new software takes users to a unique, fully-customised web page suited to mobile phones.

Users can also track how many times a code has been scanned and analyse the results.

Cybernetics managing director Frits van Calker said: “One in three adults in the UK now owns a smartphone, and the number of users scanning QR codes grew by 43% last year, so this is a very exciting growth area in online marketing.

“More and more companies are realising the potential of QR codes as a new way of communicating with customers.

“There are plenty of providers out there offering QR code services, but what makes Cybernetics different is that we create custom web pages that are perfectly suited to viewing on mobile phones.”

One businessman using the software to grow his sales is florist Leon Van Berkel, who trades at Mold Market.

Cybernetics created a QR code that directs users to a purpose-built mobile site that showcases Van Berkel Flowers.

A banner containing the QR code has now been fitted to the stall at Mold market.

Mr Van Berkel said: “Hopefully our regular customers, as well as passers-by, will be curious to scan the code and find out more about the business.

“We are always looking for new ways to communicate with customers, and Cybernetics came up with a solution that really suits our needs.”
