MEMBERS of Chester Youth Club (CYC) faced a panel of business professionals during a Dragons’ Den-style pitch to gain funds for their forthcoming expedition to Gambia.

The DoubleTree by Hilton Chester played host to the local ‘Dragons’ and 13 eager CYC members pitched for sponsorship for their overseas expedition and presented the positive long-term effects of their trip.

Members of CYC plan to travel to Kajabang, part of the Gunjur Village situated in rural Gambia, to compete a community project.

To gain a place on the expedition the young people were required to secure £100 each from the investors to fund 12 months of schooling for a Gambian student.

The generous local Dragons consisted of Mel Grundy, director of Chester’s largest marketing and advertising agency, Oakbase; John Thomson, director of Spinney Nursery; Darren Dixon, general manager of the Club and Spa at Hoole Hall, and DoubleTree by Hilton Chester’s operations manager, Peter Hendry.

CYC member Sophie Edwards, aged 14, said: “We’re all so excited for the upcoming expedition. We understand it’s not a holiday and it’s going to be a lot of hard work, but it will be worth it.”
