CITY centre retailers are celebrating success in the Chester Retail Cup.

Cruise Nightclub won the inaugural event, which saw 12 retailers competing on hobby horses along the Eastgate Street course.

The Cruise team’s Top Cees entry, consisting of jockey Jack Lissen, groom Martyn Holloway and trainer Neal O’Connor, stormed through from a slow start to pip Grosvenor Shopping Centre’s Hugs Dancer at the post.

A Cruise spokeswoman said: “We are very proud of our team. The win tied in with our first anniversary, so we are very happy and will absolutely be back next year.”

Grosvenor Shopping Centre’s team, made up of ‘Jockey Shorts’ Stuart Heath, ‘Trainer Pants’ John Childs and ‘Grosvenor’s Groovy Groom’ Mike Tapsell, was pleased with the result.

Julie Webb, manager of the shopping centre, said: “Jockey Shorts put in an excellent performance in the race.

“We would like to thank the security team who put in such an excellent performance to represent the Grosvenor Shopping Centre retailers.

“We were definitely worth an each-way bet and are proud of the wall plaque and trophy presented to us by the Lord Mayor.”
