One of Chester’s best known stores has now closed its doors after more than 10 years in business.

American clothes retailer Gap had confirmed last month that their Chester branch was going to close, and the shop on Northgate Street, made its final sale on September 22.

It follows an announcement from American bosses that a quarter of Gap stores in North America would be closing this year.

The Chronicle contacted Gap to ask what would be going in its place and what would be happening to the staff, but they had not responded at time of going to press.

In a statement last month, Gap representative Sean Piazza said: “On June 15, Gap Inc announced a series of strategic initiatives designed to increase productivity and profitability at its namesake brand.

“As part of Gap brand’s comprehensive effort to position Gap brand for improved business performance, the brand will right-size its speciality store fleet to better reflect how customers shop.

“These changes will help Gap showcase its brand in the most successful locations, and enable the brand to remain focused on offering consistent, on-brand product collections and enhancing the customer experience across all of our channels, including a smaller, more vibrant fleet of stores.

“As part of this effort, I can confirm our Chester location will close on September 22, 2015.”
