A COUPLE are celebrating gaining regional recognition for their village pub’s wholesome country food.

The Bickerton Poacher, on Wrexham Road, Bulkeley, picked up awards for Best Food and Best Marketed Pub at the 2010 ‘Warm Welcome’ awards held by Scottish & Newcastle Pub Company, at a ceremony in Bristol.

Husband and wife Ian and Tracy Williams, who have owned the pub for six years, beat 500 other establishments to receive the accolades for the hearty, home cooked meals they offer seven days a week.

Ian said: “We work hard to produce good food using local produce. We are pretty much in the middle of nowhere but our website and regular local advertising helps us stay busy and I would say that our most common customers are the diners.”

And it isn’t only the food that The Bickerton Poacher is famous for.

Aside from running a popular Bed and Breakfast facility at the pub, over the last few years, Ian and Tracy have turned the pub’s old pool room into a small convenience store, where customers can buy fresh food and swap their books and DVDs.

But most unique is the old fashioned skittle alley dominating the pub’s interior, which can be hired out by large parties.

Ian said: “We’re so pleased with the awards - you toil every day and work hard so it is nice to be acknowledged for it.”
