A talented rower could soon be rowing for Oxford after achieving outstanding A-level results at Abbey Gate College.

Bucking the national trend, which has seen the number of students achieving top grades fall, the college once again achieved top marks with more than 80% of students achieving A* to C grades.

Among today’s success stories at the Saighton college is talented rower Ruth Siddorn, who achieved top A* grades in biology and chemistry, and an A in mathematics, and has secured a place at Oxford to study chemistry.

Staff at the college have praised the hard work and determination of the students, saying they are “incredibly proud” of them following the outstanding results today.

The students were praised as “tremendous ambassadors” by staff who said they deserved “tremendous credit” for both their academic and personal achievements.

Headmistress Tracy Pollard said: “I am very proud of the achievements of our sixth formers.

“They are a promising group of young people with many diverse talents, as well as proven academic ability.

“They have contributed a great deal to the success of the college in many areas, have been excellent role models and I am sure each student will make a great success of their future and I wish them all the best.”

Some of the success stories include:

Nicholas Bradley, who has secured a place at Imperial College London to study physics with theoretical physics with a three A*s and one A.

Nathan Davis is going to study philosophy at Durham after achieving two A*s and one A.

Edward Hockedy achieved two A*s and one A and will be studying computer science at Durham.

Eliot Weir has secured a place at Edinburgh to study geology after achieving one A* and two As.

And Molly Barendt, who achieved 3As and has secured a place at Liverpool to study medicine.
