Whatever America does, it always seems that we are not very far behind.

So it is with the end of school prom - once the epitome of all things American, it has now passed into our culture as a much-anticipated and planned-for event.

The prom has, in fact, taken on a life of its own with specialist shops springing up selling everything from gowns to tiaras.

And while the dress code is decidedly formal it is open to inter- pretation.

While the prom presents a rare occasion to dress like a princess in a full- length gown, these days it is equally as acceptable to turn up in something short and sassy. Or something cocktail length. Something full-skirted or slim-fitting.

In fact the choice is endless - because the fashion industry has recognised the fact that occasionally we love to ditch our jeans and swathe ourselves in silk and satin.

And once you have found your gown, book yourself a stretch limo and you can live the American dream - well for one night only.
