Cheryl Cole may be the nation's current darling but even she has body hang-ups. The singer recently admitted she has "insecurities about a lot of things. I relate to women who have issues with their legs or noses or whatever".

We all have something that makes us cringe and curse when we look in the mirror.

Millions of Brits feel their bodies could do with an extreme makeover - almost half of adults (44%) would consider cosmetic surgery, according to Mintel research.

But drastic surgery to fix body image woes comes with high risks and high costs - and the credit crunch is creating a dangerous market for unsafe procedures.

"We are concerned that people may be tempted to "shop around" for cheaper treatments, which could lead to a surge in horror stories if administered by poorly trained practitioners," warns Dr John Curran, president of The British Association of Cosmetic Doctors.

So before you even think about braving the surgeon's knife or laser gun, put beauty's non nip-tuck alternatives to the test. Whether it's boosting your assets, tackling lumps and bumps or zapping wrinkles, there's sure to be a solution.

EYE LIFT

Under-eye bags, crows' feet or droopy lids making you fret? Eyes are the windows to your soul - and your age, according to a recent Olay survey. Even George Clooney has succumbed to eye surgery to get rid of the "tired" look.

AT HOME ALTERNATIVE: Crystal Clear Eye Pen, £89.50 (with 4 x 5ml refills) (Selfridges)

OUR TESTER SAID: "The pulsating action from the pen is painless and plumps the under-eye area. I got bored using it every day but results are pretty instantaneous so it's great for a quick and effective under-eye boost."

TRY: Avon ANEW Clinical Crow's Feet Corrector, £20 (www.avonshop.co.uk) or Pixi Brow Lift, £16 (www.pixibeauty.com).

BREAST AUGMENTATION

The boob job remains the most common surgical procedure for Britons. In 2007, almost 6,500 women transformed their assets with breast reductions or enhancements, according to figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS).

AT HOME ALTERNATIVE: Rodial Boob Job, £122.34 (www.rodial.co.uk)

OUR TESTER SAID: "I was pretty sceptical that this would increase my bust size but I noticed a change after just a couple of weeks of use. I'm not rivalling Jordan just yet but my decolletage certainly looks plumper!"

TRY: DG Breast Aid, £19.99 (www.kaloss.com) or Biotherm Bust'Up Intensive Bust Firming Gel, £28.87 (www.boots.com).

FACE LIFT

The number of women checking in for facelifts rose by a record 37% in two years, according to BAAPS. But you can go too far. Nicole Kidman's reported penchant for face-smoothing botox led to her being called a "bat face" by a cosmetic guru.

AT HOME ALTERNATIVE: Safetox, £199.99 (www.boots.com)

OUR TESTER SAID: "It's pretty complicated to use with electrical patches and requires commitment for regular use (five minutes a day for six weeks to see results) but I really noticed a difference on my eye and forehead lines."

TRY: Givenchy Radically No Surgetics Restorative Age-Defying Concentrate, £81.23 (01932 233 824) or Collin Paris Minute Lifting Mask, £30.00 (01767 682 288).

LIP ENHANCEMENT

Craving an Angelina Jolie pout? We're not all blessed with the bouncy castle lip gene but you don't have to resort to the surgeon's needle. Who wants to end up with a trout pout?

AT HOME ALTERNATIVE: PureLogicol Instant Lip Plumper, £20 (0870 750 2401/www.purelogicol.com)

OUR TESTER SAID: "Ouch. This gives your lips one hell of a tingle once it's first applied but your reward is a pillow-like pout. Even my lip colour changed to a flushed pink, but sadly the effects don't last."

TRY: Soap & Glory Mighty Mouth kit, £12.99 (www.boots.com) or LipFusion Lip Plump, £24 (www.hqhair.com).

SKIN PEEL

Non-invasive treatments like fillers and peels are becoming increasingly popular amongst anti-agers, according to the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors. But due to lack of regulation it's been dubbed a 'buyers beware' market.

AT HOME ALTERNATIVE: Olay Regenerist Micro-Dermabrasion and Mini-Peel Kit, £24.99.

OUR TESTER SAID: "After massaging a bright orange goo (which heats up) all over your face, and then a clear gel, this double action product gets to work on reviving your skin. But be prepared for a slightly red face, this is serious stuff."

TRY: Beautician's Secret Instant Face Peel, £14.95 (Superdrug) or Origins Modern Friction Nature's Gentle Dermabrasion, £27.40 (www.origins.co.uk).

LIPOSUCTION

Celebs are often rumoured to ditch the diets and rely on lipo to banish their lumps and bumps, costing an average of £3000+ per treatment.

ALTERNATIVE: The Sanctuary's Trim & Tone Body Wrap, £24.99 (www.thesanctuary.co.uk).

OUR TESTER SAID: "Prepare to mummify yourself. Using the clay solution you wrap medical looking bandages around your problem area and sit for one hour. It can get pretty uncomfortable but I lost a couple of inches from my thighs. It's a great quick-fix slimming solution if you have an event the next day."

TRY: Dr Nirdosh Lipo-Lift Anti-Cellulite Formula, £46.48 (www.drnirdosh.com) or Murad Firm & Tone Serum, £39.50 (0800 035 2682/www.muraduk.com).
