The day d'amour is looming and even singletons are jumping aboard the love boat. One in 10 are planning to go out on the prowl this Valentine's Day and half of us are planning to glam up for a special night with a partner, according to Max Factor research.

But whether you have a new date or cosy night in lined up for February 14, make sure you're turning up the seduction with your beauty regime.

From red hot lips to come-to-bed eyes, here's how to knock him dead.

FIRST DATE FUN

It may not be the first date but if you're still in the heady throes of romancing, keep your look fun and flirty for meeting up with the new man on Valentine's Day.

At this stage, it's all about initial attraction and your lips are one big erogenous zone you can't neglect.

"The perfect pout can easily be achieved through wearing a seductive red or hot pink lip shade for irresistible kissable lips," advises Barry M's celebrity make-up artist Daniella Novak.

A heady seductive scent is also a must in your dating preparations.

TRY: POPbeauty Lip Lust in Flirty Fuchsia, £8 (popbeauty.co.uk); Philosophy Kiss Me lip balm pink or red, £10 (0870 990 8452); Jemma Kidd Stain Flush & Gloss, £21.53 (www.spacenk.co.uk); Lipcote lipstick sealer, £3.49 (nationwide); Penhaligon's Love Potion No.9, £70 (penhaligons.com).

STAR-CROSSED LOVERS

You're at the stage where you've decided on baby names (in your head) and picked out a wedding dress (but not told anyone). Yep, you're in deep.

Candlelit meals and roses are sure to be on the Valentine's agenda, so keep your look ultra-romantic. Tonight's the night when you're sure to be transfixed on one another's gaze so ensure your make-up is all about the eyes and keep lips neutral with a glossy nude tone.

"For a soft romantic look, the number one rule is to make your eyes do the talking," Daniella says.

"Mascara is key to achieving luscious lashes - concentrate on building up the colour on the outer corner of your lashes. Use small massage movements and get as close to your lash line as possible for extra lift."

TRY: Blinc Kiss Me mascara, £16.50 (HQHair.com); Max Factor False Lash Effect mascara, £10.99; Lashfood conditioner, £79 (lashfood.co.uk); Bobbi Brown Limited Edition Nude Pink lip gloss, £13 (bobbibrown.co.uk); DKNY Red Delicious Perfect Pair set, £26.43 (Superdrug).

COSY COUPLE

You and your man have gone the distance and had more romantic nights out than Elizabeth Taylor in her dating heyday. If you can't face the Valentine's Day scrum, put your feet up together and pamper yourselves silly with a bathroom love-in.

Light a sea of flickering candles around the bath and take a long luxurious soak in the tub together. Afterwards, indulge in a sensual massage with body oil to put you both in the mood.

TRY: Jo Malone Red Roses Bath Oil, £37.19 (jomalone.co.uk); Lush Tisty Tosty Heart Bath Ballistic, £2.79 (lush.co.uk); Lux Wine & Roses Bath Foam, £1.89 (Tesco); Boots Botanics Time For Passion Body & Massage Oil, £7.14; Paul & Joe Body Treatment Oil, £22.50 (paul-joe-beaute.com).

LONG-TERM LOVE

When it feels like you've been together for eternity, it's even more important to make an effort and feel like a new woman for Valentine's night with your beloved.

Whether you're going out or staying in, give yourself a mini makeover. Break with your usual make-up routine and try something different.

"For a more dramatic look, apply a shimmering shade all over the eyelid in a shade you love," Danielle suggests.

"Compliment the shimmer shade with a liquid eyeliner on the top lash line. Once you reach your outer lashes, extend the eyeliner slightly further into a flick for a sultry 'Cleopatra' effect."

TRY: Barry M Shimmering Eye & Lip Crayon, £4.50; (barrym.com); Clinique Brush-On Cream Liner, £11.74 (clinique.co.uk); Givenchy Absolutely Irresistible Poupoupidou Puff shimmering body powder, £35.73 (01932 233 824); L Eau de Parfum, £50 (www.united-perfumes.com).

TRIED & TESTED

Complete your Valentine's look with scarlet talons, ideal for all those hand-holding moments. We try three red hot nail polishes.

- Marks and Spencer Flame red, £2.50 (marksandspencer.com)

This shade is almost a sorbet red, making it a brilliant bright polish for summer. I needed two quick-drying coats, and I loved the final colour, but it started to chip after a few days.

- Revlon Red, £6.29 (0800 085 2716)

This is a classic pillar box red that gives a glossy finish in just one quick coat. Really long-lasting too.

- Zoya Gia red, £9.25 (0800 111 6647/zoyapolish.co.uk)

There's something about this red polish - I got so many comments while wearing it. The flame red finish is super-shiny and I only needed one coat.
