Olivia Richards was only a youngster when she first developed a passion for recycling unwanted items.
She’d accompany her father, scouring car boot and jumble sales for vintage finds, designer clothing and antiques, before using eBay as a means for selling them.
These days, her thrifty ways and resourcefulness has enabled her to develop her passion into a successful business.
When the now 29-year-old realised there was a large percentage of people who didn’t know how to use eBay, due to the lack of their time or internet connection, or not being computer savvy , Olivia decided to use this to her advantage.
“I thought that starting in a small way and advertising my services just in Chester City Centre was the best way to start,” recalls Olivia.
“So I posted flyers door to door in the CH1-3 areas which brought a steady trickle of business in which I now hope to expand into other areas of Chester.”
The gist of Olivia’s business involves spending time with her clients, evaluating, collecting and storing items free of charge; otherwise the items can stay with the owner until they are sold.
She gets a good idea of what is saleable, and can predict a good reasonable starting price before bringing the items back to her office, where she then catalogues them and produces professional photographs in her studio.
Her efficient service makes sure every item is regularly tracked, securely packaged and posted on time.
Olivia will take 25% of the total sale value for her own fees, including a £1 labour cost for each item, exclusive of standard eBay charges.
“I do ask that all items are clean, genuine, non mechanical and can cover many different categories,” she says.
“For example, one of my original jobs was to handle wet suits and motorcycle clothing which was a really successful sale.”
And she’s always thinking of new ideas on how to expand her business.
“A new idea I’ve had is to help people who are moving house to dispose of those unwanted items they don’t want to take with them, thus creating much needed cash for their new property,” she says.
“I also offer the same services for commercial businesses and retail outlets.”
