Artist Gordon Young came to the art department at Neston High School to talk about his work and the proposals for developing public art in Neston market square.

Gordon, who has worked on many public projects around the world including the comedy carpet in Blackpool, worked with Year 8 students to discuss the fascinating discoveries they have made about Neston, including the fact it is the home of hypnotism.

Gordon has identified a strong tradition of floral art work particularly on gravestones in the cemetery and on local buildings.

He asked students to be part of the design process and, in consultation with a working group, is hoping to develop public art that reflects the identity of Neston and the traditions that have shaped it.

Students worked in groups to develop and record their ideas about the floral theme and what they would like to see developed in the market square.

The students impressed Gordon with their inspiration and original ideas.

The students’ ideas will be developed further for a second workshop with Gordon Young.

These will contribute to the final designs of the public art planned for Neston Market Square.
