Helsby Golf Club raised an impressive £17,000 for its Powered Wheelchair Appeal at its annual fundraiser.

The day, which was supported by about 180 people, comprised a golf competition, raffles, auctions and the presentation of powered wheelchairs to five local youngsters: Declan Price, Emily Tedds, Emily Riley, Bethany Stocker, Alex Grice.

The new donations bring the total number of wheelchairs given by the appeal to 325 over the last 32 years.

ITV presenter Lucy Meacock, Weaver Vale MP Graham Evans and paralympic tennis medallist Mark Eccleston lent their support to the occasion.

Kathryn Hoather, of the Powered Wheelchair Appeal, said: “A fantastic sum of about £17,000 was raised on the day and the club and Wheelchair Appeal would like to thank all the local  businesses in Helsby, Frodsham, Chester, Ellesmere Port, Widnes and St Helens who supported them with donations and prizes.

“Particular thanks must go to the event main sponsor Jigsaw Law.

“Of course huge thanks must also go to the golfers including members from Helsby Golf Club and other local clubs and also regular supporters from farther afield in Yorkshire, London, Scotland, the Midlands and Norfolk.

“We particularly appreciated the support and time out of their diaries that Lucy, Graham and Mark gave.”

Mother and daughter duo Kathleen and Julia Wilkinson won the ladies’ golfing competition, while Helsby Golf Club Captain Colin Wilkinson and John Butler took home the men’s titles.
