Film buffs are in for a treat after Chester’s only city centre cinema has announced its new big screen programme.

Chester Film Society is presenting a diverse range of films for 2016-17, drawn largely from world cinema for local film fanatics.

The coming season of 19 films kicks off on Tuesday, September 13, at St Mary’s Centre with the Estonian-Georgian film, Tangerines - an old-fashioned anti-war film.

In contrast, a delightful comedy, Grandma, featuring Lily Tomlin in her first leading role for 27 years, will follow on Tuesday, September 27.

The season will continue every other week until April 2017, with highlights including a Hallowe'en offering of The Witch; a screening of The Battle of Algiers on its 50th anniversary; the sumptuous Tale of Tales and a season finale of Love and Friendship.

Films will be shown at St Mary’s Centre and The Grosvenor Museum .

The society, established in 1970, is the only current permanent cinema within the city and offers a range of events over the next year.

Memberships are available for £45 for entry to all 19 films.

Non-members are welcome to attend any film as guests at a cost of £4 each.

The film society’s annual social night, which completely sold out last year, will also be held on Saturday, February 4, 2017, followed by The International Film Festival in March next year.
