CHESTER: There is to be a partial eclipse of the sun from about 8.30pm. If weather permits the Chester Astronomical Society will be hosting a combined astronomical/historical event in Town Hall Square. Three hundred years ago, Henry Prescott, the then deputy registrar of Chester Diocese, observed a similar eclipse from this location, an event recorded in his diary which is held by the Chester Records Office. The society will have safe observing equipment available for members of the public to view the eclipse. CHESTER: Society of Thirteen meeting at the Grosvenor Museum at 7.30pm with talk on Dee Bridge Disaster 1847 by Dr Peter Lewis, a senior lecturer in the Department of Materials Engineering at The Open University. In this lecture the roots of a less well known railway disaster are identified. A new railway bridge over the Dee in Chester opened in September 1846. However, on May 24, 1847, a local train fell through the bridge. There were five deaths and nine serious injuries. Peter Lewis gives his forensic analysis of what happened and why. Visitors £6. TILSTON: The Border Singers will be continuing their annual tradition of presenting a Passiontide programme at Tilston Parish Church of St Mary at 6.30pm. Under the direction of Simon Davies and accompanied by organist Geoffrey Walker, the programme entitled From Triumph to Tragedy will tell the story of the dramatic events in the last days of Jesus Christ. It will include extracts from Handel’s Messiah, Stainer’s Crucifixion, Bach’s St Matthew Passion and other pieces appropriate to the season, by Byrd, Victoria, Bruckner, Lotti, Gibbons and Durufle. The choral items will be interspersed with readings of appropriate poems by George Herbert and David Scott, and with Bible passages. BICKERTON: March 14 - Cheshire Rural Touring Arts present The Foundry Men in Those Magnificent Men at the village hall. Doors 7pm for 7.30pm. CHESTER: March 10-13 - Pupils at The King’s School in Chester present The Producers at 7.30pm. Based on Mel Brooks’ much loved Academy Award-winning film, the show has a cast of 27 from Year 9 to the sixth form and a band of nine. Directed by head of drama Julia Williams, the story focuses on two theatrical producers, Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom, who scheme their way into getting rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop. In an atmosphere of intense religious puritanism of the early 17th century, Susanna Hall is publicly accused of adultery with her neighbour and family friend Rafe Smith. Her husband, Dr John Hall, urges her to sue for slander in the court of Worcester Cathedral to save the family’s reputation and his practice as a distinguished physician. But how can she explain why Smith was seen leaving the herbal garden late one night when the doctor was away from home? The events of that fateful night are held up to the most searching scrutiny in this gripping thriller.
