An evening of music, song, stories and drama from the time of Dickens and Hardy is taking place at Chester’s Grosvenor Museum.

A Victorian Christmas on Wednesday December 9, staged in the red-walled Victorian lecture theatre, is a fun and festive celebration of the Yuletide our ancestors would have known.

You can join historical entertainment company Blast from the Past who will be singing favourite carols as well as listen to midwinter songs from the 19th century.

The cast of musicians and actors will also perform a festive folk play featuring St George’s battle against a villainous knight and presided over by Father Christmas himself.

Finally there will be a Christmas tale of the court of King Arthur – a figure revived in the Victorian era by authors and poets such as Scott and Tennyson.

Featuring damsels in distress, deeds of chivalry, an epic quest and of course a happy ending, the tale is told in two parts across the two halves of the show.

Cabinet member for culture, leisure and wellbeing Louise Gittins said: “The show ‘A Victorian Christmas’ is guaranteed to delight audiences of all ages.

“It includes everything for a seasonal show - from high drama to comedy, from delicate melodies to harmonies. Step back in time and recapture the simple delights of a Christmas long ago.”

The event is on Wednesday December 9 from 7.30pm -9.15pm.

Tickets, which include a glass of wine and a mince pie, cost £10 or £8 for concessions, available from the museum shop 01244 972112.
