The six week-long summer holiday is upon us and entertaining the kids for such a long period of time can often prove difficult.

To lend a helping hand, we've put together a list of specific summer events for you and the kids to enjoy.

The hugely popular Moonlight Flicks season is back for another year and is currently well underway.

The outdoor screenings will take place in the Roman Gardens five evenings a week until August 27.

Films being shown are The Artist, Birdman, Brooklyn, Dirty Dancing, Gremlins, Inside Out, Jurassic World, Mad Max: Fury Road, Matilda, The Philadelphia Story, Thelma and Louise and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Adult tickets are £8.50 and children under 12 go free (one per full price ticket).

Tickets for those under 20 and student tickets are £7.50.

Search for dinosaurs on the Dino Chester Trail

Chester city centre dinosaurs are part of a new pre-historic citywide trail

Go back to the Jurassic age and search for dinosaur fossils in celebration of Chester Zoo's hugely popular dinosaur exhibition.

Pre-historic dinosaur fossils and cave finds – many of which were found in the Cheshire region – have been put on display in 10 businesses across the city centre.

All you need to do to find the dinosaurs is pick up a free trail map from Chester’s Visitor Information Centre, the Grosvenor Museum, at participating retailers or you can download one directly from www.experiencechester.co.uk.

The trails will be available every day until Sunday, September 4.

Get creative at The Lion Salt Works Museum

Craft activities at Lion Salt Works this summer

The multi-award winning Northwich museum will be hosting a variety of creative drop-in workshops throughout the summer holidays.

All events will take place from 10.30am - 4pm with the exception of the Mad Hatter's tea party (noon - 3pm).

Participation in the events is free but a donation of £1.50 for each event is suggested.

Enjoy a film screening at the Grosvenor Museum

Every Tuesday throughout the school holidays, Chester's Grosvenor Museum will be screening a family film free of charge.

Be inspired by LEGO at Chester Cathedral

This summer Chester Cathedral will host the LEGO Bricks in Motion exhibition. The exhibition will run from Saturday 16 July to Sunday 4 September

Over 100 LEGO models, built by LEGO build masters Bright Bricks, will be on display in the Bricks in Motion exhibition at the cathedral until September 4.

The exhibition celebrates the weird and wonderful world of transport and includes a space shuttle, a F1 Mercedes, horse-drawn carriages and Concorde. The centrepiece of the exhibition will be a seven metre long faithful replica of the Titanic.

Chester Cathedral will also install a large LEGO pit for children to play in in The Refectory Café for the duration of the holidays

A series of LEGO Make and Take Saturday workshops, lasting an hour and costing £10, will also give children aged five-10 years the chance to build a sports car and then take part in a speed challenge on a special gravity-defying racetrack.

Get into the Olympic spirit at RioFest - Movies in the Meadow

RioFest Movies in the Meadow event

The Neuromuscular Centre's meadow in Winsford will play host to a Rio-themed family fun day on Thursday, July 28 in honour of the up and coming Rio Olympics.

There will be fun fete games, a bouncy castle, face painting, a craft stall and a Brazilian themed BBQ (between 12pm-2pm).

The giant outdoor cinema screen will show the 2011 hit movie Rio at 2pm and Disney's Zootropolis at 4pm - with popcorn for sale!

The fun begins at 11am with adult tickets priced at £7 and children under 16 priced at £4.50. Under 3's go free.

Witness a motoring extravaganza at Car Fest North

Stunt driver Paul Swift wowed the crowd by going the full sprint course on two wheels

The family motoring event is back for another year from July 29-31 and will take place at Bolesworth Castle.

Expect to enjoy a mix of music, cars and family fun whilst helping to raise money for BBC Children in Need.

Acts confirmed to grace the stage are Bryan Adams, Will Young, The Corrs, Squeeze, KT Tunstall and Billy Ocean.

Enjoy a children's classic at Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre

The 2016 Grosvenor Park Open Air Theatre season has officially begun and has already seen crowds of people flocking in their masses to witness an outdoor play.

A new adaption of the children's classic Stig of the Dump will be performed throughout the summer and tickets are selling out fast.

Get hooked on fishing

Canal & River Trust, the charity which cares for 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales, is holding a series of free fishing events from July through to September to celebrate National Fishing Month.

Attendees have the opportunity to receive guidance from a professional fishing coach and discover the Shropshire Union Canal.

Fishing has experienced a decline in numbers, especially among youngsters, and so the Trust is keen to help reverse these figures and help communities get the most out of fishing and their local canal or river.

Horse around at the National Waterways Museum

Guided wagonette rides in 2015

The annual 'Horses at Work and War' event returns on August 14 and has become one of the most popular attractions in the museum’s annual calendar of events.

Visitors to the museum will see working horses giving a unique demonstration of horse-drawn canal boating, horses being shod, and have the opportunity to take a wagonette ride round the historic canal docks.

Everyone and his dog should be at Tatton's annual dog show

Tatton's annual dog show will take place on Sunday, August 14

The canine event of the year takes place at Home Farm, Tatton Park on Sunday, August 14.

Amongst the 10 categories up for contention are the dog with the saddest eyes and dog with the waggiest tail.

Whilst it's all about the taking part, you may well find your canine friend has just what it takes to take a podium place.

Special rosettes are awarded for first to sixth places in each class, so few doggies go home empty pawed.

Park entry charge of £6 per car applies. £2 entry charge per class.
