The BBC has announced this morning, Sunday, January 31, that veteran broadcaster Sir Terry Wogan has died aged 77.

In a statement his family said: "Sir Terry Wogan died today after a short but brave battle with cancer.

"He passed away surrounded by his family. While we understand he will be missed by many, the family ask that their privacy is respected at this time."

BBC director general Tony Hall said: "Terry truly was a national treasure."

Sir Terry last visited Chester in June 2015 when he was in the city to sample its culinary delights for a new BBC2 show.

He was spotted at Tea on the Wall, at Cork's Out on Watergate Street and at the Refectory of Chester Cathedral filming for Terry and Mason’s Great Food Trip.

When The Chronicle caught up with Sir Terry and Mason at Tea on the Wall, the bon vivants revealed they have been charmed by Chester.

Sir Terry said: “We love Chester – it’s a lovely, lovely city.”

“It doesn’t let you down when you are on foot – it’s a bit like walking around London.”
