A night of nostalgia is planned for speedway fans 30 years on.
Ellesmere Port Gunners, the speedway team which operated from 1972 until their closure in 1985, are holding another reunion on Saturday October 17 at the Whitby Sports and Social Club on Chester Road.
The event will celebrate the thrills and spills which took place on the 424 yard track which went on to be used for greyhound racing.
An attempt to restart the team in 2001 failed after the council objected.
Organiser Keith Dwyer, who was a mechanic in the pits for much of the time the Gunners Speedway was active, says the tapes will go up at 7pm.
“We have planned for the night a disco and a raffle which we are still getting raffle prizes for,” he said. “We will also have some of the old bikes from all those years ago on display.
“I have got Hubbards Mobile Speedway Museum coming up from Kent with a couple of his bikes, there will also be my own mobile speedway museum there with six bikes plus memorabilia.
“We also have a couple more collectors bringing bikes to display there.
“There is going to be a gating machine attached to one of the bikes if the fans would like to pay to have a go on it and hopefully we will be able to get some of the old Gunners riders to have a go.”
He added: “There are a number of the ex Gunners riders that have confirmed they will be there also I have had confirmed a few non Gunners riders who are going to be there as guests.
“We are going to be having a Gunners photograph slideshow right through the night, also travelling up from Boston in Lincolnshire is the Boston Speedway reunion organiser who is going to be doing interviews with all the old riders through the night.
“It’s going to be a night not to be missed as this reunion is going to be the last one that I am organising.” Mr Dwyer says the last two reunions in 2010 and 2011 were both a success.
