They have them in San Diego, New York and London. They even have them in Wrexham. Now Chester is getting its very own comic con event.

The convention for fans of comic books, pop culture and sci-fi will be held at Chester Racecourse on Sunday, September 25 and tickets are now on sale.

The first five special guests have been announced and organisers are promising there are ‘lots more to come’.

North Wales actor Spencer Wilding is the headline name so far.

The 6ft 6in muscleman, 43, has appeared in numerous hit films and TV shows, usually heavily disguised under layers of costume and prosthetics. He’s played an Ice Warrior in Doctor Who, a White Walker on Game of Thrones, the wolf in the 2010 film The Wolfman and Frankenstein’s monster in last year’s Victor Frankenstein movie, alongside Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy.

Wilding is also heavily rumoured to be the man who plays Darth Vader in the forthcoming ‘Rogue One’ Star Wars spin-off, due for release in December.

Fans will be able to get Wilding’s autograph as well as having a photo session and Q&A with the giant actor, who will be joined in Chester by fellow actor Julian Seager and comic book artists Phil Winslade, Neil Edwards and Dave Taylor.

Seager’s CV includes work on Guardians Of The Galaxy and Thor: The Dark World, while Winslade, Edwards and Taylor have illustrated titles such as Ant Man, The Flash, Assassin’s Creed, Judge Dredd and World’s Finest.

More and more comic cons are taking place around the world.

In April, thousands of fans turned out in force for one staged in Wrexham.

The Chester Comic Con has been organised Comic Co Events, a company formed by three men – Alistair Blake, Mark Jones and Stuart Stevenson – with the aim of putting on events in their home city.

Mark and Stuart planned the Brook Street Carnivals, while Alistair is a web developer and creative solutions expert for businesses. Stuart owns the comic book shop on Brook Street and has run comic cons in Dublin, Liverpool and Manchester.

Chester Comic Con is at Chester Racecourse on Sunday, September 25.

Tickets can be bought HERE and fans are welcome to go in ‘cosplay’, dressing up as their favourite sci-fi or comic book heroes.
